Caribbean
Also known as the West Indies, the islands, reefs, cays and islets of the Caribbean number more than 7,000. Even though these islands are often geographically close to one another they can differ in language, government and political structure. As such, going from one island to the next on a multi-island holiday can mean that you are going from one very different culture to another.
The bulk of the islands in the Caribbean are located on the Caribbean Plate, but their geographies and climates can differ as much as their cultures. Islands such as Aruba, Barbados, the Cayman Islands and Antigua are all relatively flat and are of non-volcanic origin. Other islands such as Cuba, Jamaica, Saint Lucia and Trinidad & Tobago are mountainous and formed from volcanic action.
Even though the general climate of the area is tropical, rainfall varies according to elevation and size of the island as well as water currents. As such, some islands are very arid while others have distinct rainforest areas.
The kind of accommodation, activities, dining and nightlife available on the islands is as varied as the islands themselves. But one thing remains constant: beautiful beaches, turquoise waters and warmth and hospitality are omnipresent.
From swimming with the dolphins in Barbados, tropical bird watching in Trinidad, diving with the sharks in the Bahamas, horseback riding on empty beaches in the Dominican, to snorkeling, scuba diving and hiking, the islands of the Caribbean make full use of the nature and wildlife around them. The flora and fauna is so different from what most visitors are accustomed, that tours and day trips to see, taste, hear and experience the wonders of a tropical climate are very popular.
The waters of the Caribbean offer some of the best deep-sea fishing in the world and just about every island offers boat charters and tours to allow the tourist to experience this kind of adventure. From fishing for blue marlin off the coast of Puerto Rico to swordfish fishing in Antigua, the opportunities for sport fishing abound.
Parasailing, kayaking, jet skiing, waterskiing, golf, tennis, bike riding, underwater submarine tours, glass bottom boat tours, aerial trams, exploring caves and more. If relaxing is more your style there are limitless shopping areas for both high end and locally made items, five star and local restaurants as well as endless pools, beaches, and shady lanes for taking strolls. There is no dearth of activities to enjoy while in the Caribbean and no lack of resorts, hotels and guest houses from which to explore the islands. From high end, all inclusive resorts on pristine sandy beaches to secluded guest houses in villages, there truly is an island for every desire and something to keep every person, young or old, entertained for a memorable holiday.
