Bahamas
The Bahamas is a cluster of 29 islands in the Atlantic Ocean, just north of the Caribbean Sea. Less than 3 hours from New York by plane, the Bahamas are a tropical vacation dream for honeymooners and couples-to-be alike. The most popular Bahamian destinations are Nassau and Grand Bahama Island, but there are a number of smaller islands ideal for more remote experiences as well.
The capital of the Bahamas, Nassau, is on New Providence Island. Along with being an international business and finance center, Nassau is also a prime vacation spot. Characterized by brightly colored hibiscus, palm trees, and the signature Caribbean white beaches and turquoise water, Nassau is a tropical mainstay. The top of Queen’s Staircase affords a magnificent view of the island. Historic Victorian and Colonial architecture, as well as 18th century forts, dots the town. Nassau is peppered with luxury resorts, most famously the Atlantis Bahamas. Indigenous straw crafts can be purchased at the Straw Market on Bay Street, the shopping epicenter of the island. Visitors searching for an exciting nightlife will not be disappointed, either –Nassau sports the Caribbean’s largest casino, the Atlantis, as well as many nightclubs and bars.
Check out underwater wrecks and caves at Grand Bahama Island, where diving, snorkeling, water sports, boating, and sailing are the name of the game. Grand Bahama features a host of beaches, including Gold Rock Beach, part of Lucayan National Park, which itself is home to the Lucayan Caverns, the longest surveyed in the world. Also part of Grand Bahama, Taino Beach is ideal for children. It hosts Junkanoo, a celebration involving costumes, a street parade, and lively music between December 26th and January 1st, as well as the entire month of June.
Bimini Island is comprised of two tiny islands, North and South, joined by a flat at the edge of an underwater cliff plummeting into the ocean. Bimini’s Bahamas Bank is the most revered fishing and diving locale. Bimini is a popular place for scuba divers to explore reefs, wrecks, and wildlife. Dolphins, mantas, sea turtles, marlin, and more frolic in the Gulf Stream near the coral reefs.
Yet another Bahamian beauty, Long Island features the deepest blue hole in the Bahamas, Dean’s Blue Hole. Dean’s is more than 600 feet deep, and perfect for diving. Long Island’s beaches are topped with lush green mangroves.
The Bahamas boasts a litany of other islands, including a 120-mile long, cay-saturated island chain called the Abacos, known as the “Sailing Capital of the World.” Another island, Andros, is largest but least developed in the Bahamas, featuring the world’s third-largest barrier reef. Inagua Island is home to more than 80,000 flamingo.
These are just a smattering of the islands the Bahamas have to offer. For those planning a wedding or honeymoon, or simply enjoying a relaxing getaway, the Bahamas offer something for everyone. The abundance of natural wildlife, vivid scenery, and energetic nightlife make the Bahamas a consummate vacation destination.
