Playa de las Americas Travel Guide

Spain is a country rich in cultural diversity, as well as history, and is recognized the world over for its unique and exquisite flowers, and scenic landscape. Tenerife is 130km across at its widest point and measures 90km South to North. Its overall area measures 2000 square kilometres, and as such, is the largest of the Canary Islands.

Playa de las Americas is situated on the southwestern tip of Tenerife and has been a popular and lively resort area since the 1960s. It is a perfect destination for couples and honeymooners and boasts numerous bars, restaurants, and hotels. Its beautiful, scenic beaches have fine, white sand, and are favorites of sun worshipers everywhere. The windsurfing enthusiast will want to visit El Medano, as this area is famous for its excellent windsurfing. There are attractions in the area to please everyone, and these include golf, sailing, and dinner theaters. Veronica's Strip, famous for its nightlife, provides stimulating entertainment that attracts young tourists from all areas of Europe.

There is a wide variety of restaurants which include European, English, and Canarian style fare. Most shopping districts are open Monday through Saturday from 9:00am to 1:00pm, and then close for the afternoon, resuming business at 4:00pm and continuing throughout the evening. Traditional shops are typically closed on Sundays, while souvenir and gift shops generally stay open seven days a week. Commercial centres and other areas of concentrated bars, shops, restaurants, night clubs, and supermarkets are usually geared toward tourists. However, similar establishments on the outskirts of town cater more for the local population.

Unlike Spain's mainland, Tenerife, as well as the rest of the Canary Islands are duty free for goods such as perfumes, tobacco, cigarettes, and alcohol. However, upon returning to the United Kingdom restrictions are placed on tourists concerning the amount of duty free products that can be brought back to his or her home country. The Island's sales tax is 4.5% which makes it one of Western Europe's cheapest destinations.
