Majorca

Majorca Travel Guide

Majorca is one of the four main Balearic Islands and is located between Menorca and Ibiza off the eastern coast of the Spanish peninsula in the Mediterranean Sea. It is the most popular of the Balearic Islands with visitors and is often misunderstood to be only suited to the younger set who are only interested in partying. The reality is that while there are certainly resort areas on the island that do cater specifically to the younger generation, there certainly is much more to the island.

The popular resort areas are somewhat limited to a thirty kilometer area of the Bay of Palma as well as a smattering of mega resorts on the north eastern coast. These areas are home to high rise hotels, huge shopping areas, restaurants, nightlife venues and other assorted tourist trappings in addition to the beaches.

One of the most popular resort areas is Megaluf. This area is home to both all-inclusive and self-catering accommodations. Here you will find the sun blazing on the beaches during the day and by night neon discos, trendy clubs, and other venues light the night sky. Many great accommodation deals can be found in Megaluf, and this is a popular package vacation destination.

The island’s capital of Palma is the only real city of the Balearic Islands. This historic city is filled with ancient architecture, grand mansions, Gothic cathedrals and monuments all while surrounded by the hustle and bustle of a busy city that is home to more than 300,000 residents. Here you will find museums, castles, medieval walls, international restaurants and the ancient harbor where a plethora of cafés make the perfect mid-day stopping point to look out over the sea.

The northwest coast of the island is home to the Serra de Tramuntana harbor, snug beaches tucked into coves, quaint villages such as Fornalutx and Biniaraix that are begging to be explored as well as the monasteries of Valldemossa and Lluc.

The beaches of Majorca are especially stunning. Among the more popular beaches are the beaches of Cala D’or and Puerto de Soller. From narrow beaches located in towns to isolated inlets with tiny beaches, there is something for everybody in Majorca.

Majorca is an island that has become synonymous with good times among the partying sect, but it also has plenty to offer those who are looking for a quieter vacation surrounded by natural beauty, stunning beaches, warm sun and the trademark turquoise waters of the Balearic Islands.
