Only 20 minutes from the San Juan International Airport is the resort town of Palma Nova. This was one of the first places on the island to be developed as a tourist center, and it still remains one of Majorca's main attractions. Palma Nova is near the resort city of Magaluf, but is quieter and more family-oriented. The noisy discos of Magaluf are largely absent here, and small children will probably find it more to their liking.
Historic Points of Interest:
There is a charming historic quarter with many structures going back to the Renaissance and Baroque eras. There are several famous churches here including the Gothic cathedral which took over 500 years to built. The city is not too large and can be seen best on a walking tour. After dark the cathedral and the Almudaina Palace are floodlit for a stunning spectacle on the waterfront.
Bellver Castle is a 14th century structure on the Bay of Palma, originally built as a military fortress and famed for its unique circular shape. Today it is known for its beautiful view of the bay which draws thousands of visitors every year.
Modern Amusements:
As in all of Majorca's cities, the water is a big attraction. Skiing, diving and other water activities are very popular, while the glass bottomed boats in the bay are a big hit with the kids.
The cafe scene is popular with the adults, and offers every kind of food from MacDonald's to local fare. There are even cafeteria-style restaurants for the families. Those who enjoy an after-dinner drink can choose from local brands or more familiar names.
Visitors can enjoy all kinds of athletic activities including golf, go-carting, kite surfing and jet skiing. There are several water parks in the area, popular with both adults and kids.
