Costa del Sol

Since the 1950’s the Costa del Sol has been recognized as a popular tourist destination and the area has striven to meet the demands of international tourists. The beaches, culture, natural beauty, gastronomy and more are all lures to the area that include the cities of Malaga and Marbella as well as a host of other smaller towns.

The Costa del Sol gained international notoriety during the 1970’s and 1980’s when numerous British gangsters fled to this area of Spain to avoid legal issues, and where they could live their out their lives in relative luxury. The diplomatic relations of the time ensured that Spain did not enforce the extradition treaties, hence these lawbreakers were assured asylum. This trend was featured in film and television which served to increase awareness of the Sun Coast and to further increase tourism.

Today the Costa del Sol welcomes millions of tourists every year who flock to the numerous resorts that line the coast stretching from Gibraltar to Nerja. They come for the sun, the beach and the warm hospitality of the locals.

Offering one of the best climates in Europe, the 161 kilometers of coastline on the Costa del Sol is mostly beach. Many of the area’s best hotels and resorts are built close to or on the beach, and many restaurants are also in close proximity. The beaches are among the best in the world. They are cleaned each day and offer a wealth of services from lifeguards, beach beds and umbrellas, showers, children’s parks, water sports and more. Numerous bars and restaurants are nearby, but if you just want rest and relaxation there are a number of beaches that are specifically for naturists.

With eleven marinas in the area, this area benefits from a wealth of water sports. From boat charters and sailing lessons to surfboarding or just playing with a snorkel, you’ll never be bored. If land sports are more to your liking consider golf. With more than 40 golf clubs the concentration of golf in the region is the highest in all of Europe. Courses vary in difficulty and many of the courses are maintained at championship status. Other popular sports include tennis, badminton, squash and paddle tennis as well as horseback riding. For the more adventurous there is mountain climbing, hang-gliding, and rock climbing. The best place to find these sports is in the Abdalajís Valley.

The opportunities to explore nature on the Costa del Sol are nearly endless. Cycling or hiking from small town to small town, exploring caves such as the Nerja Cave or potholing, or just spending lazy afternoons exploring the Selwo Aventura Wildlife Park or Tivoli Park; the area is stunningly beautiful and must be experienced.
